How to Properly clean a garbage disposal

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

Garbage disposals are a convenient appliance in the kitchen that helps dispose of food waste. However, over time, food particles can accumulate in the disposal, causing unpleasant odors and clogs. In this blog post, we will discuss how to properly clean garbage disposal to keep it working effectively and eliminate bad smells.

Turn Off the Power

Before cleaning your garbage disposal, it is important to turn off the power to avoid any accidents. Turn off the disposal unit from the wall switch or unplug it from the electrical outlet. This will ensure that the blades don't accidentally turn on while you are cleaning the unit.

Remove any Debris

Next, remove any debris or large food particles from the disposal. Using tongs or pliers, reach into the disposal unit and remove any visible debris. Be careful not to put your hands inside the disposal.

Use Ice Cubes

Using ice cubes is an effective way to clean and sharpen the blades of your garbage disposal. Fill an ice cube tray with water and freeze it. Once the ice cubes are frozen, drop them into the disposal unit and turn it on. The ice will break down any debris or buildup inside the disposal and sharpen the blades.

Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are natural cleaning agents that can help to eliminate bad odors and clean your garbage disposal. Pour ½ cup of baking soda into the disposal, followed by ½ cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes, then pour boiling water into the disposal to flush out any remaining debris.

Use a Disposal Cleaner

There are several commercial garbage disposal cleaners available that can effectively clean and deodorize your garbage disposal. Follow the instructions on the cleaner's label, and use it according to the manufacturer's directions.

Clean the Splash Guard

The splash guard is the rubber flap that covers the disposal unit's opening. It can accumulate debris and bacteria, leading to bad smells. To clean the splash guard, use a toothbrush or scrub brush and hot, soapy water. Scrub the entire surface of the splash guard and rinse with hot water.

In conclusion, proper cleaning of your garbage disposal is essential to keep it functioning effectively and eliminate bad smells. By following these tips, you can keep your garbage disposal clean and in good condition, ensuring that it lasts for years to come.
